Early Morning Structure Fire

10-28-09 Shortly after 5 am the Anchorage Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2900 Barbara Drive - off of 29th/Turnagain. Upon arrival units reported a well-involved working structure fire. This was a single family residence with a detached garage.

Units from Stations 5 (Spenard) 1 (Downtown) and 4 (Tudor) responded. Flames were visible from several windows and doorways. One female resident was outside the structure when units first arrived. The female patient was transported by Medic 5 to the hospital at 0516. There is no further patient information available.

Alarm time was 0514. The fire was uncer control at 0534. The structure sustained significant damage and the cause is under investigation. At this time the cause is not deemed to be suspicious. Damages are estimated between $80-90,000. A bird, a cat and a small dog perished in the fire.

The Anclhorage Fire Department and the US Fire Adminstration wants to remind all residents: October is Fire Prevention Month:

"Install, Inspect and Protect"

1. Install working smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) detectors.

2.  Inspect them (check their batteries)

3.  Protect ourselves (practice home escape plans).
