West Anchorage Garage Fire

West Anchorage Garage Fire

Shortly before 2:30 a.m. the Anchorage Fire Department Communications Center received a 911 caller reporting a garage fire to the rear of 3002 Barbara St.  Eleven AFD units were dispatched and the first arriving engine company from the nearby Spenard Station reported a working fire.  Fire crews had difficulty accessing the scene because of a number of cars parked in the alley way.  As fire crews began to enter the structure they were confronted with many different types of hazardous materials, many which were typically found in garages, had became involved and were now fueling the fire.  Crews were able to bring the blaze under control in a little over an hour, and the last crew left the scene over three hours after the fire was discovered.  The fire caused extensive damage to the structure and the cause remains under investigation.
