Kitchen Fire Damages Home

East Anchorage Kitchen Fire Hurts One

Anchorage Fire Department Communications Center 911 Dispatchers answered a call just before 7:15 p.m. tonight (September 2, 2008) reporting a kitchen fire at home on 420 Fredricks Dr. east of Turpin.  The caller had safely escaped the fire, although one occupant was reportedly still in the house attempting to extinguish the fire.

Twelve fire and rescue units were dispatched within moments after the call was received and Engine 6 from the Debarr/Patterson Fire Station arrived within 5 minutes.  Engine 6 Captain reported light smoke showing near the roof and initiated a fast attack.  Additional arriving units assisted with a water supply and ventilation.  The fire was quickly brought under control within 3 minutes and contained to the kitchen area.

There were two occupants in the home when the fire broke out, although it’s not clear where they were in the structure when the fire began.  Fire Crews determined the cause of the blaze originated from the stove area and it’s believed this was a cooking related fire.  Smoke and fire caused an estimated $20K - $25K in damage to the home.  The occupants will be temporarily displaced and staying with neighbors.  One of the occupants was transported to an area hospital after being overcome with stress related to the fire.  No assistance from the Red Cross was requested and no pets were found in the home.

This was the second fire in less than 24 hours where the homeowners attempted to extinguish the blaze, which the fire department strongly urges residents to get out safely.  Multiple things can and will occur when fighting fires to include steam conversion burns, inhalation of lethal carcinogens from the smoke, and becoming entrapped in the structure.  The best method to assist firefighters in controlling the spread of a fire is to close all doors and windows when exiting the dwelling, and provide accountability for everyone.
