Fire Mitigation Projects Continue in Bear Valley and Indian Valley

The Division of Forestry (DOF) Pioneer Peak crew will be burning slash piles in Section 36 of Bear Valley. The crews will be working on the downhill side of Clark’s Road to the east of Height’s Hill. This is continuation from a wildfire mitigation project from 2006; burning will continue through next week. Firefighting crews from AFD and DOF will be monitoring burn piles at all times.  Mechanical tree removal and mulching is also taking place on the uphill side of Clark’s Road.  The goal of these projects is to keep wildland fire away from roads to provide for safe egress and ingress.  Native grasses will be planted to help discourage undesirable reed grass species from returning to the area.

Fire mitigation work continues in a cooperative project in Chugach State Park in Indian Valley.  This is a joint partnership with AFD, Chugach State Park land and the Division of Forestry. The DOF Technicians are working to remove beetle kill from around the trailhead and will be burning the slash piles in place. The project has been occurring for the past few weeks and will continue for approximately two more weeks.
