Municipal Budget Cuts Affect Anchorage Fire Department
Second round of cuts eliminates additional vacant positions
The Anchorage Fire Department is absorbing cuts to its department byeliminating positions from the budget that are all currently vacant.
- 2 positions in Data Systems that involve EMS and fire reporting were cut in the first round of budget reductions announced last week. These positions were vacated in late 2008 and scheduled to be filled in early 2009.
- 2management positions in Fire Administration.
- 10 vacant firefighter positions. These vacancies resulted from retirements in 2008.
"These cuts will not impact the quality or professional, compassionate care Anchorage citizens have come to expect." Fire Chief Craig Goodrich said.
The vacant firefighter positions were being held until the next firefighter academy which has now been postponed tosummer of2010. The last fire academy was held in 2008; due to high operational costs, AFD typically runs an academy every two years.
