10-28-09 Shortly after 5 am the Anchorage Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 2900 Barbara Drive - off of 29th/Turnagain. Upon arrival units reported a well-involved working structure fire. This was a single family residence with a detached garage.

Units from Stations 5 (Spenard) 1 (Downtown) and 4 (Tudor) responded. Flames were visible from several windows and doorways. One female resident was outside the structure when units first arrived. The female patient was transported by Medic 5 to the hospital at 0516. There is no further patient information available.

Alarm time was 0514. The fire was uncer control at 0534. The structure sustained significant damage and the cause is under investigation. At this time the cause is not deemed to be suspicious. Damages are estimated between $80-90,000. A bird, a cat and a small dog perished in the fire.

The Anclhorage Fire Department and the US Fire Adminstration wants to remind all residents: October is Fire Prevention Month:

"Install, Inspect and Protect"

1. Install working smoke and CO (carbon monoxide) detectors.

2.  Inspect them (check their batteries)

3.  Protect ourselves (practice home escape plans).

Nine Anchorage Fire units responded to a structure fire on Dos Circle off of Abbott at 8:55 PM. Engine 12 was first on scene and called working fire upon seeing flames from the roof. The fire was rendered under control within 10 minutes and damages are estimated to be approximately $20,000. There were no injuries and the fire originated from using the fireplace. A structure fire was occurred at 5411 Mockingbird Dr at 2258hrs. There were 12 units assigned to the incident. Approximate damage is estimated at $50,000 and this incident is currently under investigation. Please call PIO officer for further information.

Shortly before 5 am this morning the Anchorage Fire Department responded to a reported trailer fire at 9599 Brayton

Space #444. Upon arrival, units reported a fully involved trailer fire. Approximately 80% of the trailer was engulfed in flame.

This fire resulted in a fire fatality. The adult victim was located at 0525 am. The cause is under investigation. There is no further information available at this time. This is the second fire fatality for 2009.

At 4:40 this morning, 11 Anchorage Fire Department units responding to a 911 caller reporting smoke coming from a mobile home at 1200 W. Dimond. Engine 12 was the first unit on scene and called a working fire after seeing smoke coming from the backside of the home. The fire was rendered under control within 14 minutes and damage was limited to $10K and mostly external in nature. The fire orginated under the trailer and the origin is unknown at this time. The residents were uninjured and are staying with relatives for the night.

WENDLER MIDDLE SCHOOL

MEDIVAC AND EXTRICATION EVENT

Excellent Photo Opportunity - October 7th - 1015 AM

The Tudor Fire Station (4) will conduct an Extrication Demonstration and Career Counseling session at Wendler Middle School on Wednesday - October 7th at  appx 1000 am.  Station crews will be assisted by LifeMed Alaska Helicopter Medivac crews to reenact  the rescue and extrication of a simulated trapped victim as a result of an auto accident.  Fire Department personnel will provide career and educational information for safe driving.   Riggs Towing has generously donated towing services for the demonstration.  Winter is just around the corner and Anchorage has numerous vehicle accidents during the winter months as conditions deteriorate.  All Media personnel are welcome to attend this exciting and worthwhile learning opportunity and demonstration.  Additional information:  Senior Capt. Structure Fire On Hillside

 

Shortly after 4pm on Wednesday, September 30th, the Anchorage Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 12341 Audobon Circle off of Huffman. Eleven units from the O'Malley, Huffman, Rabbit Creek and Tudor stations responded. Upon arrival units reported a large, 3-level single family residence with heavy fire involvement from the basement through the roof.

The residence was occupied at the time of the fire, and 3 adults and one child evacuated safely. In addition the family dogs were safely removed from the burning structure. This was a fast moving fire and when responding units arrived, portions of the building were collapsing. which necessitated an exterior attack.
Four tenders (water tankers) relayed and maintained a constant water supply between the hydants at South High School and the residence.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. At this time the cause is not deemed to be suspicious. Witnesses reported the fire started on the exterior west side of the residence near the deck. There were no injuries reported. Damages are estimated at $300,000. This structure is approvimately 3600 square feet. Units remianed on scene for several hours and the investigation is continuing. 

The Anchorage Fire Department wants to remind all residents that October is Fire Prevention Month - check your detectors and practice your home escape plans.  "Stay Fire Smart, Don't Get Burned".
