Vehicle Fire Ignites House
Just before 9pm last night a resident from a home on Staedem Drive dialed 911 and reported their vehicle on fire which was parked next to their residence. Engine 6 was first on location and advised the vehicle had caught the residence on fire. A working fire was declared and soon after the rest of the twelve unit response arrived. The fire was rendered under control within thirty minutes. Damages are estimated at $75,000 due to the total loss of the vehicle and one room of the residence. The residents, a family of three, were displaced for the night. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
Fire Damages Unit in Four-Plex
Shortly after noon today a structure fire was reported at 501 Pine Street. The individual who called 911 from an adjacent apartment reported there was black smoke coming from a first floor unit of the Anchorage four-plex. Engine 3 arrived less than four minutes later and called a working fire. Eleven additional apparatus from the Anchorage Fire Department soon followed.
Firefighters quickly advanced a hose line into the structure to fight the fire, which had fully involved the apartment. A primary search revealed all occupants of the four-plex were evacuated. The fire was under control within seven minutes of the first arriving unit. Suppression efforts were extended to the apartment directly upstairs; once inside, firefighters quickly determined the upstairs unit only sustained smoke damage and the fire was contained to the unit of origin.
The exact cause of the fire is currently being investigated; however the kitchen has been determined as the room of origin. A resident of the building suffered minor smoke inhalation and traveled to the hospital in a personal vehicle.

Car Fire Spreads to House
At 1:37 a.m. this morning, Wednesday October 17, 2007 the Anchorage Fire Department received a 911 call reporting a car on fire next to a home at 8040 Northwood St. The vehicle was reported to be engulfed in flames and threatening the home. Eleven AFD units were dispatched and while responding additional callers reported the car exploding in a ball of flames extending to the dwelling. Anchorage Police Officers were first on location and confirmed these reports.
Engine 7 from the Jewel Lake Fire Station arrived within five minutes and called a working fire. The fire had scaled the exterior of the two story structure and breached the attic area through the eaves. A fast attack was initiated on the exterior and as additional crews arrived they entered the structure to keep the flames from advancing further inside. Some fire vented through portions of the roof, but the efforts of the fire crews succeeded in blocking the fire from reaching the living areas of the home. The fire was brought under control in about twenty minutes.
The Red Cross was summoned for three adults displaced by the fire, and they also provided canteen services to fire crews. There were no fire ground injuries and no civilian casualties. A damage estimate was not available at this writing, although the exterior of the structure did receive extensive fire damage and some smoke damage throughout the interior. Firefighters protected much of the dwellings furnishings with salvage covers while battling the blaze. Fire Investigators were consulted as the origin of the fire in the vehicle is considered suspicious in nature.

Fire Mitigation Projects Continue in Bear Valley and Indian Valley
The Division of Forestry (DOF) Pioneer Peak crew will be burning slash piles in Section 36 of Bear Valley. The crews will be working on the downhill side of Clark’s Road to the east of Height’s Hill. This is continuation from a wildfire mitigation project from 2006; burning will continue through next week. Firefighting crews from AFD and DOF will be monitoring burn piles at all times. Mechanical tree removal and mulching is also taking place on the uphill side of Clark’s Road. The goal of these projects is to keep wildland fire away from roads to provide for safe egress and ingress. Native grasses will be planted to help discourage undesirable reed grass species from returning to the area.
Fire mitigation work continues in a cooperative project in Chugach State Park in Indian Valley. This is a joint partnership with AFD, Chugach State Park land and the Division of Forestry. The DOF Technicians are working to remove beetle kill from around the trailhead and will be burning the slash piles in place. The project has been occurring for the past few weeks and will continue for approximately two more weeks.
