Mitigation to Reduce Wildfire Exposure near Two South Anchorage Schools
The Anchorage Fire Department has partnered with the Anchorage School District and the MOA Parks & Recreation Department to mitigate the risk and hazard of wildfire. This project, which begins Monday, January 29, will thin the forested perimeter around both Hanshew Middle and Springhill Elementary Schools, which are both adjacent to Ruth Arcand Park.
This project will reduce the volume of surrounding forest fuels. This will reduce the school’s exposure to wildfire and also reduce the potential for fires to start in the treated areas.
The focus is to limit the school’s exposure to wildfire by working both in the perimeter around the schools and in the adjacent MOA park land. Crews will remove the spruce bark beetle killed trees and thin dense growing conifers to improve forest health. AFD will plant spruce seedlings and grass where needed in the spring.
Please contact AFD Forester Sue Barkwood for more information at 267-4902.

Home Suffers Major Damage from Garage Fire
Shortly before 7 p.m. on January 24, 2007 the Anchorage Fire Department Communications Center received a 911 call from a person inside 3320 Caress Circle reporting their garage was on fire. Eleven AFD units were dispatched moments later as additional 911 calls were received from neighbors indicating heavy fire in the garage area. All occupants from the home had safely evacuated prior to the first Engine Company arriving minutes later from the Tudor & MacInnes station. A working fire was confirmed with twenty five percent involvement on a single two story home with attached garage. A quick decision by the Engine Company Captain to attack the fire from inside the living area of the home is credited to containing the fire and damage largely to the garage area. Additional crews assisted with ensuring there was no fire extension into the home and with fire suppression bringing the blaze under control within 15 minutes. During overhaul operations the origin of the fire was determined to be in the area of an electrical panel, which is also believed to be the ignition source of the fire. Damages are estimated at $150,000 to the structure and no estimate was available on loss of contents. There were no firefighter or civilian injuries resulting from the fire. The four adults and one child displaced were able to arrange for temporary living accommodations and did not require assistance from the local Red Cross.

Fire Makes East Side Home Uninhabitable
On Sunday, January 21 at approximately 1638 hrs, the Anchorage Fire Department Communications Center received a call of flames and smoke coming from the basement windows of a residence in the 7200 block of Christopher Circle, off of Lore Road and Abbott Loop Road. Eleven units were immediately dispatched and the first unit arrived on location eight minutes after the initial call. Initial size-up indicated this was a single-family residence and all occupants had self-evacuated. The fire was called under control ten minutes after the first units’ arrival. The dwelling was deemed inhabitable and Red Cross was called for the displacement of 2 adults and 2 children. The fire appears to have been caused by the burning of a candle. And the estimated value of damage has yet to be determined.
Sunday Night Fire Damages Structure
Shortly before 10:30 p.m. Sunday evening Anchorage Fire Department dispatched 13 units to 8712 Seemie St., in the area of Abbott Road and Lake Otis. Initial reports to AFD Dispatchers came from neighbors reporting what they believed to be exhaust collecting in the eve area of the roof, possibly from a running vehicle in the adjacent alleyway. The first truck company from Fire Station #12 at Homer and 80th arrived within minutes and called a working fire with smoke venting from the roof area. The structure was unoccupied and fire crews had to use forcible entry to begin battling the blaze. Their quick attack brought the fire under control in about 15 minutes and damage was contained to the interior of the structure. It appeared the structure had been converted from a single family dwelling to an office, although there was no business name available. The fire caused an estimated $40,000 in damage to the structure and no estimate to loss of contents. There were no injuries or displacement caused by the fire. Initial investigation determined the cause of the fire was most likely electrical in nature.
At approx 1331hrs, 17 units from the Anchorage Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire at 20300 block of Eagle River Rd with reports of children inside. Several additional units were added to the response. The first unit arrived on location and advised there was smoke showing. There were four children taken to local hospitals. Two others made it outside of the residence on their own and called 911 from a neighbor’s house. The fire is still under investigation at this time.
